Description
Indulge in the classic Bananas Foster, featuring caramelized bananas in a rich, buttery sauce served warm over vanilla ice cream. This delightful dessert is perfect for impressing guests or enjoying a cozy night in.
Ingredients
Scale
- 4 ripe bananas, peeled and sliced lengthwise
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 1 cup brown sugar, packed
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 cup banana liqueur (such as Bols or DeKuyper)
- 1/4 cup dark rum
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Vanilla ice cream, for serving
- Chopped pecans or walnuts, for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- In a large skillet, melt the unsalted butter over medium heat, ensuring it doesn’t brown too much.
- Once melted, add the packed brown sugar and ground cinnamon. Stir continuously until the sugar is fully dissolved and the mixture is smooth (about 2-3 minutes).
- Carefully add the banana liqueur and stir well. Allow it to simmer for another minute.
- Gently place the sliced bananas into the skillet, ensuring they are evenly coated with the sauce. Cook for about 2-3 minutes, turning gently.
- Add the dark rum over the bananas and sauce.
- Carefully ignite the rum using a long lighter or match, standing back to watch the flames dance. Allow the flames to subside naturally (about 30 seconds to a minute).
- Stir in the vanilla extract once the flames have died down.
- Scoop vanilla ice cream into a serving bowl or plate.
- Spoon the warm banana mixture over the ice cream, drizzling plenty of sauce on top.
- Optionally, sprinkle chopped pecans or walnuts for added crunch.
- Serve immediately while warm and melty.
Notes
- Choose ripe bananas that are slightly speckled for the best flavor.
- Be cautious when igniting the rum; keep flammable materials away and use a long lighter.
- For a non-alcoholic version, skip the rum and banana liqueur, adding more vanilla extract and a splash of orange juice instead.
- Experiment with different nuts or a sprinkle of sea salt for added flavor.
