Ingredients
Scale
- 2 ripe but firm bananas, peeled and sliced into ½-inch thick rounds
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- ¼ cup packed brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- Pinch of salt
- 1 cup strong brewed coffee, cooled (or 2 shots of espresso)
- 1 cup milk of your choice (dairy or non-dairy), chilled
- 2 tablespoons caramel sauce (store-bought or homemade)
- Ice cubes
- Optional: Whipped cream, extra caramel sauce, and a banana slice for garnish
Instructions
- In a medium-sized skillet over medium heat, melt the butter.
- Add the brown sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt. Stir until the brown sugar is dissolved and the mixture forms a smooth, syrupy sauce (1-2 minutes).
- Gently add the banana slices to the skillet in a single layer. Cook for 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and caramelized.
- Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
- Fill a tall glass with ice cubes.
- Drizzle about 2 tablespoons of caramel sauce around the inside of the glass.
- Place a few of the caramelized banana slices at the bottom of the glass, on top of the ice.
- Gently pour the cooled coffee (or espresso) over the ice and bananas.
- Slowly pour the chilled milk over the coffee.
- Use a long spoon or straw to gently stir the latte, combining the coffee, milk, and caramel sauce.
- Garnish with whipped cream, extra caramel sauce, and a slice of caramelized banana (optional).
Notes
- Spice it Up: Add a pinch of nutmeg or cardamom to the caramelized bananas for a warm, spicy flavor.
- Chocolate Lover’s Dream: Add a tablespoon of chocolate syrup or cocoa powder to the latte for a mocha twist.
- Make it Vegan: Use plant-based butter, milk, and whipped cream to make this latte completely vegan.
- Banana Bread Latte: Add a dash of banana extract and a sprinkle of chopped walnuts to mimic the flavors of banana bread.
- Hot Latte Version: If you prefer a hot latte, simply heat the milk and coffee before combining them with the caramelized bananas and caramel sauce.
- Caramel Sauce Options: While store-bought caramel sauce is convenient, homemade caramel sauce will elevate the flavor even further. You can find many easy recipes online.
- Coffee Strength: Adjust the amount of coffee or espresso to your liking. If you prefer a stronger coffee flavor, use more coffee or espresso.
- Sweetness Level: Adjust the amount of brown sugar and caramel sauce to your preference. If you prefer a less sweet latte, use less sugar and caramel sauce.
- Banana Ripeness: Use bananas that are ripe but still firm. Overripe bananas will become too mushy when caramelized.
- Serving Size: This recipe makes one large latte. You can easily double or triple the recipe to make more lattes.
- Storing Leftover Caramelized Bananas: If you have any leftover caramelized bananas, you can store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat them gently in a skillet or microwave before using them in your latte or other desserts.
- Healthier Options: To make this latte a bit healthier, you can use less brown sugar and caramel sauce, opt for unsweetened non-dairy milk, and skip the whipped cream. You can also add a sprinkle of chia seeds or flax seeds for extra nutrients.
- Bananas are too mushy: Make sure to use bananas that are ripe but still firm. Don’t overcook them in the skillet.
- Caramel sauce is too thick: Add a tablespoon of water or milk to thin it out.
- Latte is not sweet enough: Add more caramel sauce or a drizzle of honey or maple syrup.
- Latte is too sweet: Use less brown sugar and caramel sauce.
