  • Author: Dottie
  • Total Time: 30 minutes
  • Yield: 4-6 servings 1x

Description

Enjoy these crispy and golden French Toast Bites made from thick-cut brioche or challah, soaked in a rich custard of eggs, milk, and spices. Perfect for breakfast or brunch, they are served warm with maple syrup and fresh berries for a delightful treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 loaf of thick-cut bread (such as brioche or challah)
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (optional)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • Maple syrup, for serving
  • Powdered sugar, for dusting (optional)
  • Fresh berries, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Cut the loaf of bread into bite-sized cubes, about 1 to 1.5 inches in size.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, crack the 4 large eggs and whisk until well combined and slightly frothy.
  3. Pour in 1 cup of whole milk, followed by 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract, 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon, and 1/4 teaspoon of nutmeg (if using). Whisk until smooth.
  4. Add 1/4 cup of granulated sugar to the egg mixture and whisk until fully dissolved.
  5. Gently fold the bread cubes into the egg mixture, ensuring each piece is well coated. Let soak for 10-15 minutes, turning occasionally.
  6. Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat and melt 1/4 cup of unsalted butter, swirling to coat the bottom.
  7. Add the soaked bread cubes to the skillet in batches, cooking for 2-3 minutes on each side until golden brown and crispy. Flip gently with a spatula.
  8. Transfer cooked bites to a plate lined with paper towels and keep warm in a low oven (200°F or 93°C) while finishing the rest.
  9. Arrange the cooked French toast bites on a serving platter.
  10. Drizzle with warm maple syrup, dust with powdered sugar, and garnish with fresh berries.
  11. Enjoy these bites fresh off the skillet while warm.

Notes

  • Choose the Right Bread: Thick-cut brioche or challah is ideal for soaking up the custard.
  • Soaking Time: Allowing the bread to soak longer results in a custardy interior. A quick 5-minute soak can work in a pinch.
  • Adjust Sweetness: Modify the sugar in the batter to suit your taste, or serve with extra syrup.
  • Flavor Variations: Experiment with spices like cardamom or add a splash of orange zest for a unique twist.
