Ingredients
Scale
- 1 loaf of thick-cut bread (such as brioche or challah)
- 4 large eggs
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (optional)
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter
- Maple syrup, for serving
- Powdered sugar, for dusting (optional)
- Fresh berries, for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Cut the loaf of bread into bite-sized cubes, about 1 to 1.5 inches in size.
- In a large mixing bowl, crack the 4 large eggs and whisk until well combined and slightly frothy.
- Pour in 1 cup of whole milk, followed by 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract, 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon, and 1/4 teaspoon of nutmeg (if using). Whisk until smooth.
- Add 1/4 cup of granulated sugar to the egg mixture and whisk until fully dissolved.
- Gently fold the bread cubes into the egg mixture, ensuring each piece is well coated. Let soak for 10-15 minutes, turning occasionally.
- Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat and melt 1/4 cup of unsalted butter, swirling to coat the bottom.
- Add the soaked bread cubes to the skillet in batches, cooking for 2-3 minutes on each side until golden brown and crispy. Flip gently with a spatula.
- Transfer cooked bites to a plate lined with paper towels and keep warm in a low oven (200°F or 93°C) while finishing the rest.
- Arrange the cooked French toast bites on a serving platter.
- Drizzle with warm maple syrup, dust with powdered sugar, and garnish with fresh berries.
- Enjoy these bites fresh off the skillet while warm.
Notes
- Choose the Right Bread: Thick-cut brioche or challah is ideal for soaking up the custard.
- Soaking Time: Allowing the bread to soak longer results in a custardy interior. A quick 5-minute soak can work in a pinch.
- Adjust Sweetness: Modify the sugar in the batter to suit your taste, or serve with extra syrup.
- Flavor Variations: Experiment with spices like cardamom or add a splash of orange zest for a unique twist.
