Ingredients
Scale
- 2 pounds of russet potatoes
- 1 cup of heavy cream
- 1/2 cup of unsalted butter
- 1/2 cup of sour cream
- Salt, to taste
- Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
- 1/4 cup of chives, finely chopped (optional)
- Garlic powder, to taste (optional)
Instructions
- Choose the Right Potatoes: Opt for russet potatoes for the creamiest texture. Yukon Gold potatoes can also be used for a slightly buttery flavor.
- Peel and Cut: Peel the potatoes using a vegetable peeler. Cut them into even chunks, about 1 to 2 inches in size for even cooking.
- Rinse the Potatoes: Rinse the potato chunks under cold water to remove excess starch, which helps achieve a fluffier mash.
- Boil the Potatoes: Place the rinsed potatoes in a large pot, cover with cold water, and add a pinch of salt. Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce to a simmer. Cook for 15-20 minutes or until fork-tender.
- Drain the Potatoes: Drain the cooked potatoes in a colander and let them sit for a few minutes to allow excess moisture to evaporate.
- Heat the Cream and Butter: In a small saucepan, combine the heavy cream and unsalted butter. Heat over low until the butter is melted and the cream is warm.
- Add Sour Cream: Remove the saucepan from heat and stir in the sour cream for added tanginess.
- Mash the Potatoes: Transfer the drained potatoes to a large mixing bowl. Use a potato masher to mash until desired consistency is reached.
- Incorporate the Creamy Mixture: Gradually pour the warm cream and butter mixture into the mashed potatoes, mixing gently to incorporate without overworking.
- Season to Taste: Season the mixture with salt and freshly ground black pepper, adjusting to your preference. Optionally, add garlic powder for extra flavor.
- Add Chives (Optional): Fold in finely chopped chives for added color and flavor.
- Serve Immediately: Serve the creamy mashed potatoes warm. To keep them warm, place the bowl over a pot of simmering water, stirring occasionally.
Notes
- Storing Leftovers: Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-4 days.
- Reheating: Reheat in a saucepan over low heat, adding a splash of milk or cream to loosen the mixture.
