Description

Fire Cider is a tangy, spicy tonic made with apple cider vinegar and fresh ingredients, designed to boost your immune system during cold and flu season. This versatile elixir can be taken as a daily shot for health benefits or used as a zesty salad dressing.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 quart apple cider vinegar
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 10 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon grated ginger
  • 1 tablespoon grated horseradish (optional)
  • 1 jalapeño pepper, chopped (seeds removed for less heat)
  • 1 lemon, juiced and zested
  • 1 tablespoon turmeric powder
  • 1 tablespoon black peppercorns
  • 2 tablespoons raw honey (or to taste)
  • Fresh herbs (like rosemary or thyme, optional)

Instructions

  1. Gather all your ingredients. Chop the onion, mince the garlic, grate the ginger and horseradish (if using), chop the jalapeño, and juice and zest the lemon. Measure out the turmeric and black peppercorns. If using fresh herbs, rinse and chop them finely.
  2. In a large glass jar, combine the chopped onion, minced garlic, grated ginger, grated horseradish, chopped jalapeño, lemon juice and zest, turmeric powder, and black peppercorns. Pour the apple cider vinegar over the mixture until it completely covers the solid ingredients. Add raw honey to taste and stir gently to combine.
  3. Seal the jar tightly and place it in a cool, dark place for 2 to 4 weeks. Check every few days, giving it a gentle shake to ensure the ingredients remain submerged. The flavors will meld together over time; a fermentation period of about 3 weeks is recommended for a robust flavor.
  4. After the fermentation period, strain the mixture using a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth over a bowl. Press down on the solids to extract as much liquid as possible. Discard the solids and transfer the strained liquid back into a clean jar or bottle.
  5. Store the fire cider in the refrigerator, where it can last for several months. For best flavor and potency, use it within 6 months. Enjoy a daily shot for immune support or use it as a salad dressing by mixing it with olive oil.

Notes

  • Adjust the amount of honey based on your taste preference.
  • Feel free to experiment with different herbs to customize the flavor.
  • Always ensure the ingredients are submerged in vinegar to prevent spoilage.
